Crushing Coral by Untalan Middle School - Chelsea Taga, Shanelle Navarro & Arlene Castro
"This particular canvas demonstrates a way in which people harm our coral reefs. Stepping on coral can actually cause them to deteriorate. Our coral reef artwork is made with recycled materials washed up on Talofofo Bay shores, such as plastics and driftwood. The tabbies symbolize individuals stepping on the coral formations. The pool noodle and discarded snorkel are both making contact with the coral. These are items used for water recreational activities. This idea can relate to this theme because our ocean and organisms within the ecosystem belong to our island, thus giving us the right to protect it from harmful actions. Pieces of broken coral would be spread around to represent the consequences of such harms placed on the organisms.”
Mixed media, plastics washed up from Talofofo Bay, used pipe cleaners, styrofoam noodle, driftwood, plastic loofahs, grout.
