Goggue I Tasi / Protect the Ocean by Gillian Duenas

Personified, the ocean is calling her people to protect by blowing a kulo' which is a practice found across the pacific to summon our people/ancenstors. Two sakman carry people that are responding to her call and moving towards her. Below the water, there are bleached corals and woven akgak fishes. In the sky, there are 13 woven akgak stars representing the months in the Chamoru lunar calendar. There is also a well-known motif from chief Gadao's cave which is another nod to our ancestral art and ways of knowing. This piece is a call to action for our people regarding the devastating impacts of climate change, and a reminder that our ancestors, land, and ocean have always provided everything that we need to create solutions and thrive for generations to come.
